Kabul (dpa) – At least 12 Afghan security forces were killed in the
past 48 hours in clashes with the Taliban in western Badghis
province, the Afghan Ministry of Defence said on Monday.
At least 34 police and members of the Afghan army were also wounded
in the clashes in the province’s Bala Murghab district, where Taliban
militants have staged a number of attacks in the past month.
The militants took the district on Saturday after heavy clashes began
last week. The clashes have left over 20 dead in the past week,
according to provincial council member Mohammad Nasir Nazari.
The Afghan air force has been bombarding Taliban positions in the
district for two days, hampering their capability to launch further
attacks, provincial councillor Abdul Aziz Baig said.
Security forces were now busy planning an operation in a bid to
retake the district, he said.
Over 300 families have left their homes since the battle intensified,
